Junior Leadership Team - school council
Hawthorn is proud that we actively engage the voice of students in key decision making. Effectively engaging students as educational decision-makers requires teaching young people how to take responsibility for their own learning and raising their aspirations and self-esteem.
We have an active Junior Leadership Team (JLT)which consists of two members from each class from Year 2 upwards who are nominated and voted for by their classmates.
They meet to discuss social and moral issues along with making decisions about some aspects of school life.
Minutes are kept and the areas for discussion are then fed back to the rest of the class where they can all share their views and thoughts.
The Junior Leadership Team also has a budget to spend – this is decided upon by the SLT Body. The Junior Leadership Team also has the right to present to the Academy Committee if they request extra funding to support a major project.
The Junior Leadership Team members are also actively involved in the appointment of school staff.
The Junior Leadership Team has a noticeboard and suggestion box located in the Assembly Hall.
"Our role is to act as a link between the children in our class, the Junior Leadership Team, Mr Rhodes and the Senior Leadership Team and the Academy Committee of Hawthorn Primary.
As a member of the Junior Leadership Team, we have a special role in making sure that the children in our school have a ‘voice’ and have opportunities to evaluate and develop Hawthorn Primary so that it continues to grow, thrive and succeed."
